HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!

Sunday, 03 Jan 2010

So I know I am a few days late, but what the heck right. I hope you guys brought in the New Year with a bang (literally and figuratively) lol..hehe. Ok, let me stop…some of my family members read this. Anywho, it’s a new year, which means a new beginning. We all start with a clean slate and hopefully are bringing none of the drama and negative energy that may have existed in 2009 into 2010. I personally am DRAMA FREE and want to scream it at the top of my lungs. It seems like everywhere I turn someone (well, not everyone), has some issues going on and most of the time they are the ones that are keeping the negative energy swirling. Let that mess die. I for one am really excited about the new year and all that it is going to bring. I just get a GREAT feeling about what is going to come my way. The new year for many signifies the onslaught of resolutions. In the past I have made at least one new year’s resolution every year, and I made a few this year as well, but in a different frame of reference. I no longer want to think of the things I need to change/work on as resolutions. Resolution means: 1) a resolve or determination (to make a firm resolution to do something); 2) firmness of mind or purpose.

Making New Year’s resolutions is not a bad idea. Some people take them really seriously (exempli gratia, an alcoholic who makes a resolution to begin AA in the new year), while others make resolutions for far less “complicated” reasons (a resolution to only go out 3  nights a week rather than 4). Both are ways of taking baby steps to resolve bigger issues at hand, and there is definitely nothing wrong with that. But what happens after February rolls around.  You are back to going out 4 nights a week and sleeping next to that bottle of Hennessy. Resolutions signify what most people want to achieve in the new year, but for me, the word resolution in itself gives me a reason to give whatever I set out to accomplish the deuces come February.  Instead, why not approach your new goals with fortitude rather than with the “i just need something to accomplish in the new year” attitude. Fortitude means (not insulting your intelligence, but I want to define it), mental and emotional strength in facing difficulty, adversity, danger, or temptation courageously. Changing my thought process in regards to what I actually want to accomplish in the new year helps me stick to it a little longer. Not saying that I will make it to December, but I will definitely make it past February. If people took their resolutions more seriously, then maybe, just maybe they could be upheld. But NO, everyone wants to give up pork, stop drinking hard liquor only because they had a hangover on Jan 1st, or stay single the whole year. HA…let the summer time roll around..Uncle Cletus has the ribs on the grill, Cousin Clyde is mixing the Hunch Punch just right WITH the pineapples, and he brought a fine friend who is just your type…CHILE PLEASE.

Instead focus on bigger accomplishment…I WILL get into grad school this year…I WILL buy my own home this year…I WILL get a new job this year. These are what you take on with fortitude. Your resolutions can be..I MUST study for my GRE every weekend…I MUST save half of my paycheck every two weeks…I MUST apply to at least 3 jobs each week. Maybe I made this resolution thing too complicated for you guys but this process works perfectly in my little acorn head. I know, I’m such a weirdo.

P.S. If anyone would like to fund my schooling to get a degree in Psychology or Psychiatry (mental disorders really intrigue me for some reason), I would greatly appreciate it. D@mnit why did I have to major in business :-(

  1. FIRST, let me say……..YYEEEAAAHHH!!! I have been PATIENTLY waiting to see another title & picture next to “It Came Like An Epiphany” and the tug-of-war heart picture for a while now. Feignin” for another blog posting. I mean I know you are busy with your job but DANG!!!! Can a sista get a lil’ hit e’ry now & then. LOL! Just kidding. Do you girl! I’ll just continue to check EVERY SINGLE LONG DAY! Hoping for something new. Anywho,…….

WOW!!! You REALLY said that. I love the FORTITUDE part. That is sooooo true though. EVERYONE and their momma makes New Years Resolutions that are gone by Feb if not two weeks into January. So seeing them, or going towards them with a sense of FORTITUDE could really change things or your attitude towards your goals. That DEFINITELY gave me something to think about and a new way of looking at those New Year’s resolutions of mine.
I also like how you broke down the resolutions vs. the accomplishments. Very well written! But hey………….you are SoSaditty! (That was meant in a good way!)
And Psychology or Psychiatry?!?!? NEVER knew you were interested in those fields of study! Interesting……I have a few people I can DEFINITELY send your way when you get your practice up and running. :-)
